How to calculate BMI
Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a simple calculation that compares your weight with your height. It is commonly used as a general guide to whether someone is underweight, within a healthy weight range, overweight or obese.
BMI formula
BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
Example: 75kg and 175cm
A height of 175cm is 1.75m.
1.75 × 1.75 = 3.0625
75 ÷ 3.0625 = 24.49
Estimated BMI = 24.49
What this calculator is for
This BMI calculator gives a quick estimate using weight and height. It can help provide a general indication of weight category, but it does not measure body fat directly.
Understanding BMI categories
BMI categories are commonly used as a broad screening guide. They do not account for muscle mass, age, ethnicity, pregnancy, body composition or individual health circumstances.
Common BMI categories
Under 18.5 may be classed as underweight.
18.5 to 24.9 is often considered a healthy weight range.
25 to 29.9 may be classed as overweight.
30 or above may be classed as obese.
Important note
BMI is only a general guide. Athletes, older adults, pregnant people and people with higher muscle mass may not get a useful picture from BMI alone. If you are concerned about your weight or health, speak to a qualified healthcare professional.
